The Alabama football team is 4-1 and ranked in the top ten of the latest AP Poll, but reeling after a historic road loss against the Vanderbilt Commodores. Last Saturday, the Alabama Crimson Tide fell victim to one of the greatest upsets in SEC history, losing on the road against Vanderbilt for the first time in over half a century. Alabama entered the contest as more than a three-touchdown favorite and spotting the top ranking in the polls. However, 394 yards of total offense from Alabama was not enough to overcome a stellar performance from Vandy quarterback Diego Pavia in an eventual 40-35 loss.
After digesting last weekend’s conference tilt, many fans and experts criticized Alabama’s defensive effort. On Wednesday, one of Alabama football’s most significant players in program history put the team’s defense on blast, emphasizing their need to shift into “crisis mode.”
Former Alabama Football RB Mark Ingram Takes Aim at Defense
According to On3 on Twitter:
Former Alabama RB Mark Ingram says the Crimson Tide’s defense is in crisis mode after its past 6 quarters:
“Bama’s defense is in crisis mode right now. In the last six quarters, 67 points, 784 yards, opponents are converting third downs at a 54% rate. They’ve allowed ten 20-yard plays. Like you thought that the second half of the Georgia thing might have just been Georgia, but no, that’s truly who the defense is right now.”

Ingram, Alabama football’s first Heisman Trophy Award winner circa 2009, believes the program’s latest loss puts the defense in a “crisis” while referencing the last six quarters of competition. During that span, the Georgia Bulldogs and Vanderbilt Commodores have combined for a ludicrous 67 points while nearing 1,000 yards of offense. Two Saturdays ago, despite holding a 30-7 halftime lead, Alabama was trailing 34-33 in the final minutes of regulation. Last weekend, the Alabama Crimson Tide were torn apart by Vandy dual-threat passer Diego Pavia, with the New Mexico State transfer going 16-of-20 for 252 yards and two touchdowns.
Entering Saturday’s home contest against South Carolina, the Crimson Tide are allowing 20 points per game, an average they have only allowed once since 2008. Nevertheless, Alabama fans are distraught with the current status of their defense, while college football diehards are relishing that the juggernaut Crimson Tide is fresh off their worst loss in program history:
But Bama fans told us a drop-off would never happen post Saban, and now they're losing to an Ivy School of the South 😭

Thought Joel Klatt's words on Alabama were a little harsh at first

This is why it is not ideal to follow the legend. The bar is way too high. It happened to Nebraska. Gradually, the bar has been lower and lower thanks to many years of pain and suffering.
