Before the season began, the Denver Broncos surprised everybody when they announced Bo Nix would be the team’s starting quarterback. At this point of the campaign, an NFL insider has predicted that the franchise will trade either Zach Wilson or Jerry Stidham before the trade deadline.
The Broncos currently sit at 3-2, thanks largely to their strong defense and special teams. However, for the team to remain competitive in the playoff race, their offense, led by Nix, needs to demonstrate greater consistency. Despite ranking 18th in overall DVOA, the Broncos’ offense has struggled, sitting at 25th with a -14.9% rating. In contrast, their defense ranks fourth, showcasing their ability to keep games close.
Recent analytics highlight the importance of improved offensive performance, particularly in the first half of games. Nix has shown potential, especially in the second half, but the team must find a way to translate that into more effective starts. Upcoming matchups against the Los Angeles Chargers and New Orleans Saints will be crucial. Both teams have strong defenses, and the Broncos need to step up their offensive game to secure victories.
The playoff picture is starting to take shape, and while the Broncos have a fighting chance, their path is challenging. They will face tough competition from teams like the Kansas City Chiefs and Baltimore Ravens, both of which rank among the top in DVOA. If the Broncos can enhance their offensive output while relying on their solid defense, they may still have a shot at a playoff berth. The next few weeks will be pivotal in determining their fate this season.
NFL Insider Jeremy Fowler Predicts Denver Broncos Will Trade Either Zach Wilson or Jarrett Stidham Before the Deadline
Rather than keep either Wilson or Stidham for the entire season, the Broncos have the option to get some value or assets before the trade deadline passes. This is detailed more in Jeremy Fowler’s analysis for ESPN on which quarterback is going to be traded soon.
“I’ll go with Zach Wilson or Jarrett Stidham out of Denver. The Broncos have a surplus at the position, with the luxury of maintaining a quality backup whether it trades a passer or not. Wilson seems to be the logical candidate because he’s No. 3 on the depth chart.
Coach Sean Payton has been excited to work with Wilson since acquiring the 25-year-old passer in April, and Wilson’s $1.055 million salary is far cheaper than Stidham’s $4.49 million. I could see Denver having dialogue with multiple quarterback-needy teams and moving one of Bo Nix’s backups based on the direction of those talks,” Fowler wrote.
With the Broncos going for Nix as their starter, Zach Wilson has emerged as a potential trade candidate ahead of the deadline. Wilson, currently third on the depth chart, is making just over $1 million this season, making him an appealing option for teams in need of quarterback depth. Meanwhile, Stidham is also a valuable trade asset before the November 5 deadline. With starting experience and a manageable contract, he may attract teams seeking a reliable backup, especially those facing quarterback challenges.
While their future remains uncertain, a trade could provide the two quarterbacks with a fresh start and the opportunity to revive their career. Ultimately, the Broncos may look to leverage their surplus at quarterback for future gains by using either Wilson or Stidham.
