Texans rookie receiver John Metchie III gives statement following diagnosis

In a statement posted to the Texans Twitter account, Metchie assures fans he is in good spirits.
“Recently I was diagnosed with APL (Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia), the most curable form of Leukemia. I am currently receiving great medical care, am in good spirits and i expect to make a recovery at a later point in time. As a result of this diagnosis, I will likely not be playing football this season. My main focus will be on my health and recovery. Thank you for your support and well-wishes. I cannot wait to come back stronger than ever. God bless.”
The 22 year old was drafted by the Texans in the second round of this years draft. The Texans traded the 68th, 108th, and 124th picks to the Cleveland Browns for the 44th pick to acquire Metchie. He is coming off of a 1,142 yard, 8 touchdown season with Alabama. His season was unfortunately cut short during the 2021 SEC game where he tore his ACL. He was on track to recover before the season began prior to his diagnosis.
Nick Saban offers support in statement

Metchie played three seasons in Alabama and left with a respectable stat line. 155 receptions for 2,081 yards and 14 touchdowns. His college head coach Nick Saban offered support in a statement Alabama Football posted to Twitter.

The Houston Texans will have to wait at least another year to put their second round rookie to use. For now the Texans will continue on with a wide receiver set that looks very similar to last year.
