Every now and then there is one play that really sticks with fans for generations and Titans Tight End Frank Wycheck generated one of those plays. Game-winning plays are always even more substantia so even though a player may not be a clear superstar, they can absolutely become a household name.
Music-City Miracle Legend and Former Titans TE Passes Away
That is exactly what happened with legendary tight end Frank Wycheck when he was the biggest component in the “Music City Miracle” against the Buffalo Bills. Wycheck was one of the leading players on the Oilers team after they moved from Houston to Tennessee in 1997. Wycheck was an exceptional tight end over the course of his career and managed to put together a long career after being drafted by the Washington Redskins in the 1993 NFL Draft.
It was reported by Wycheck’s family in a statement that he fell inside his Chattanooga, Tennessee home and hit his head on Saturday morning. He was found unresponsive later that day and was pronounced dead immediately.
On January 8, 2000, the Tennessee Titans took on the Buffalo Bills in a wild card play off game and fell 16-15 with 16 seconds left in the game. As any sports fan knows, this is a completely hopeless situation as you’re essentially left with the kickoff return to score a touchdown with virtually no time left on the clock. Wycheck caught the kickoff and after running to the right, threw a lateral pass all the way across the field to wide receiver/kick returner Kevin Dyson, who then ran 75 yards to score the winning touchdown to give the Titans a 22-16 victory to complete one of the most spectacular endings to a game of all time.
Wycheck leaves two adult daughters (Deanne and Madison, both married) and three grandchildren (Leo, Stevie and August). The family plans to work with experts for ongoing traumatic brain injury (TBI) and CTE research as were his requests. He will be missed as a joyous member of the NFL family.
