The Tampa Bay Buccaneers securing Liam Coen’s services as offensive coordinator is vital in convincing Baker Mayfield to sign a new deal and stay at the Raymond James Stadium.
However, the former Kentucky Wildcats OC wasn’t just brought in simply to appease their franchise quarterback. Throughout his years as an NFL coach, Coen has built his skills and reputation on the shoulders of great coaches who shaped his offensive philosophy.
Bucs fans curious about their new OC’s history will be surprised to know that he’ll be bringing offensive concepts from great offensive minds.
Who has new Tampa Bay Buccaneers OC Liam Coen worked under?
During his introductory press conference, Coen touched on his plans for the Bucs offense and working with Mayfield.
People who paid attention to the conference and closely follow the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2024 will find that some of his concepts are lifted from some of the game’s most brilliant minds, which was covered by Pewter Report’s Matt Matera.
One of the biggest influences in his coaching career is Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay. The innovative genius, who he worked for twice has a mark on his offensive schemes that he helped run in Kentucky and Los Angeles when he was named McVay’s offensive coordinator in 2022.
“Sean… he gave me a different outlook on coaching,” Liam Coen said. “I had been doing it for a little while there and [I was] sitting there one afternoon as an assistant receivers coach. I [had] just gotten there, and he comes in at 6:00 a.m. during OTAs and says, ‘Hey man, I appreciate what you’re doing and I’m really glad you’re here.’
The other head coach who has an impact on his career is Kentucky head coach Mark Stoops. Coaching in the SEC is a tough task for any football coach, but for him to remain as the program’s primary shotcaller is a testament to his excellent offensive mind.
“And Coach Stoops, [has] the ability to step away, but also have an organization that he trusts, that he worked really hard to [build], and to be able to step away with understanding and trusting his coaches,” Liam Coen said. “That was something that I really learned from Coach Stoops was, ‘Man, hey, play the next play. Don’t worry about it, man. It’s all going to be okay, just go.’ He trusted and believed, and I couldn’t thank him enough for that.”
Coen will be taking the learnings he got from these two brilliant coaches to make Baker Mayfield shine all the more on the football field and push the Tampa Bay Buccaneers closer to another Super Bowl win.
