The Tampa Bay Buccaneers haven’t been exactly discreet when it comes to their offseason tactics so far.
They’re doing their best to sign both Baker Mayfield and Mike Evans to long-term deals despite the lack of a spacious cap room to accommodate the changes. Meanwhile, the other areas of the team will likely be addressed through the draft.
One of the biggest prospects they hope to bag in the 2024 draft used to be one of the most under-the-radar players. The team was probably confident that they could get him with their selection should he become available.
However, his recent performance during the 40-yard dash of this year’s Draft Combine put a lot of attention on him. It’s now uncertain whether the Buccaneers would still have a shot at getting their primary target of the 2024 Draft.
Chop Robinson’s impressive 40-yard dash time may make him unavailable for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been seriously targeting Penn State defensive end Chop Robinson throughout the 2024 NFL Draft process. They showcased their seriousness in drafting him by making him one of the first players they interviewed.
However, Maura Carey of lonestarlive.com wrote that they might be missing out on Robinson due to the outstanding performance he showcased in the combine:
It’s no secret that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have their eye on Robinson. NFL Draft analyst Mel Kiper hit the nail on the head with early mock drafts, predicting that the Buccaneers will use their first-rounder on the talented edge rusher. With the recent release of Shaquil Barrett, this selection seems even more possible.
The unfortunate reality of a playoff run is a later draft pick. This year, 25 teams are on the clock before Todd Bowles and Jason Licht can pick up the phone. After producing strong Combine numbers, Robinson may no longer be on the board at pick No. 26.
Robinson’s impressive 4.4 time during the 40 is what will make more teams interested in what he has to offer. Aside from his impressive speed, he’s also had a solid junior year at Penn State. The 6’3″, 250-lb defender from Gaithersburg, MD made 13 solo tackles, 4.0 sacks, two forced fumbles, and one pass deflection.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers would either have to trade up or make a little prayer to be able to land Robinson at 26.
