The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are clear with their offseason plans: they want to sign Baker Mayfield to a long-term deal to help them win another Super Bowl.
Mayfield’s incredible performance for the Buccaneers this season will make him one of the hottest free-agent QBs if he ever hits free agency. While there’s still no progress when it comes to his contract situation, the team has made it clear that they want to keep Mayfield on the team for the foreseeable future.
However, there’s one team that’s looking to disrupt the relationship Mayfield and the Buccaneers have built throughout the season. They’re reportedly making an active pursuit to win Mayfield away from them.
Atlanta Falcons are looking to steal Baker Mayfield from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Spun’s Hunter Hodies wrote about Tom Pelissero’s revelation that the Hawks are gunning towards getting the former first-overall pick:
‘”If there’s one dark horse that might emerge for Baker Mayfield, I would think Atlanta is it but Atlanta’s got a lot of different options, including holding the No. 8 overall pick,” Pelissero said.
The Falcons are looking at every upgrade available at quarterback since Desmond Ridder has not progressed enough over the last two seasons.
Even Falcons head coach Raheem Morris told reporters this week that he wouldn’t be standing there talking to them if they had better quarterback play.
It’s understandable why Mayfield is desired by the Falcons. During his first season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the 26-year-old Oklahoma product threw career-highs in passing yards (4044) and touchdowns (28).
He also led the team well during the playoffs despite the team eventually losing to the Detroit Lions in the Divisional rounds.
Fortunately for them, it seems like Mayfield is not really keen to move anywhere. He’s expressed his interest to stay in Tampa, but the contract situation is the only thing stopping the Bucs from actually getting his signature.
If they manage to get him on a team-friendly deal, fans can expect their QB to play his 2024 season with the team once again.
