The Syracuse football program parted ways with former head coach Dino Babers earlier this month, opening up a coveted position in the ACC. However, it took them only a short time to set their sights on Babers’ successor. Per On3 Sports, Syracuse football expects to ink Georgia Bulldogs assistant coach Fran Brown as their next head coach.

Brown has spent the past two seasons working as the defensive backs coach at Georgia. The Bulldogs are undefeated and in prime position to win their third consecutive College Football Playoff National Championship.
Syracuse Football: Expected to Hire George DB Coach Fran Brown
Brown started his college coaching career with the Temple Owls in 2011. He joined the team as the Assistant Director of Operations. Brown quickly moved up the coaching ladder, transitioning to a graduate assistant in 2012 before becoming the defensive backs coach in 2013 under Matt Rhule. Brown served solely as the DBs coach until 2016, when he earned the assistant head coaching title. The New Jersey native followed Rhule to Baylor in 2017 while holding onto the assistant HC and defensive backs coaching roles.
Brown spent two seasons with Baylor before a short second sting with Temple and a two-year run as the DBs coach under Greg Schiano at Rutgers. The 40-year-old joined the Georgia Bulldogs coaching staff in 2022. The Bulldogs have dominated in Brown’s two years, never losing a game and beating TCU in last season’s National Championship. Georgia’s secondary has played fantastic this season, holding opposing passers to the lowest completion percentage in the SEC.
Syracuse Football: Eying Quick Turnaround in 2024
After starting the season 4-0, the Syracuse Orange posted an underwhelming 6-6 record to finish the year. Syracuse also collapsed late last season, starting the 2022 campaign 6-0 but finishing the year 7-6. However, the Orange went 10-3 in 2018 and, barring two late-season collapses, could have finished the last two years with at least eight wins.
Syracuse will need to improve on offense if they want to improve in 2024. Longtime starting quarterback Garrett Shrader has exhausted all eligibility, leaving backup Carlos Del Rio-Wilson as the potential next man up. He threw three touchdowns to six picks this season.
