Popular ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith was in deep pain on Sunday after learning the shocking passing of his former colleague, legendary NFL reporter Chris Mortensen.
News of Mortensen’s death sparked mourning around the NFL and sports world, with plenty of fans, friends, colleagues and players taking it to social media to honor and pay tribute to the sports media icon.
Stephen A. Smith’s Sad Reaction To Chris Mortensen’s Death
Mortensen passed away on Sunday, with his family confirming the heartbreaking development to ESPN. The details of his death are unknown, including the cause, but it’s worth noting that the iconic reporter was diagnosed with throat cancer back in 2016.
On X (formerly Twitter), Stephen A. expressed his heartbreak over the massive loss for the sports world. He also honored Mortensen and the work he has done for three decades, calling him a “great professional” and a “great man.”
“Sad, Sad day. Just heard the news of my guy, [Chris Mortensen’s] passing. So sad. Great insider. Great professional. Great colleague. Great man. Was always so good to me. You’ll be missed, Buddy! R.I.P.” Stephen A. Smith shared.
Mortensen was with ESPN from 1991 until deciding to step away last year. He is an award-winning journalist, bagging a plethora of accomplishments throughout his incredible career. The most noteworthy , of course, was his Dick McCann Award from the Pro Football Writers of America.
Peyton Manning Also Remembers Chris Mortensen
As mentioned, tributes poured in for Chris Mortensen following his death. Among those who honored him was his good friend, Peyton Manning.
As fans would know, it was Mortensen who broke the news about Manning’s Denver Broncos move in 2012, as well as his retirement in 2016.
On Instagram, Manning called Mortensen a “true legend,” adding that he will forever cherish the friendship that they built over the years.
“Heartbroken. We lost a true legend. Mort was the best in the business and I cherished our friendship. I trusted him with my announcement to sign with the Broncos and with the news of my retirement. I will miss him dearly and my thoughts and prayers are with Micki & his family. Rest in peace, Mort,” Manning said.
While Mortensen is gone, there is no denying that he will remain alive in the memories of his family, friends and fans. And sure enough, his legacy will never be forgotten.
