A lot of fans and members of the media think Mason Rudolph should and will be traded. Since the situation in 2019 against the Browns where a brawl broke out and Mason being in the thick of it. Mason has not been a fan favorite. To add to that, his shaky play at times and lack of Steelers success led to him being benched at one point for undrafted free agent signing Duck Hodges. The big question right now is should Mason be traded.
What’s The Verdict?
The answer from me is NO. Mason Rudolph brings value to the Steelers wether fans want to admit it or not. The 2019 season was rough without Big Ben. That season should tell you all you need to know about the situation at hand. Obviously, no-one expected Ben Roethlisberger to go down with a season ending injury or for Mason to eventually get injured. I will always praise Hodges for coming in and doing what he did with the less than Ideal situation, but there is a reason he is not on an NFL roster right now. Let’s say Mitch Trubisky and Kenny Pickett both go down and the Steelers trade Mason Rudolph. We are then rolling out Chris Oladokun, a 7th round pick and has not played a snap in the preseason.
This immediately would put the Steelers in murky waters. That is where Mason’s value lies, he is a NFL guy. He is competitive and a Steelers kind of character guy. He welcomed the new quarterbacks in and he’s the most tenured guy in the room who knows the playbook. We definitely don’t want this scenario happens but, if both Mitch and Kenny were to go down Mason can win some games. He definitely won’t be a starter otherwise, with the emergence of Kenny Pickett. Mason has shown at times that he can lead an offense and make big time NFL throws. The issue is his consistency doing it has not been great to this point. He has issues going through his reads and tends to take the safe check down. He is in my opinion a high end back up but not starter material for the Steelers.
