The future looks bright for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after a season that defied all media expectations of the team. Baker Mayfield silenced his critics in the way he usually does. Mike Evans might consider staying after his team finally found a suitable QB1 that can make the most of his talents.
Despite all of this, a huge cloud looms over the head of Shaq Barrett. His future with the team is anything but secure.
Will Shaq Barrett be out of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers?
Matt Matera of the Pewter Report reveals that Tampa is looking to re-sign Mayfield, Evans, and a smattering of others to keep themselves competitive in 2024. Barrett’s currently in the last year of his deal and may see his tenure with the team cut short due to other priorities.
Barrett, who won a Super Bowl with the Bucs in 2020 and the Denver Broncos in 2015, is taking the rumors surrounding his future with class.
A day after the Bucs lost 31-23 to the Lions in the divisional round to end their season, Shaq Barrett answered if there’s a possibility he may have played his last game as a Buc.
“There’s a possibility,” Barrett said. “I’ve been around for a minute and I know with my contract and my production and (the Bucs) got some promising young guys, all that can play a factor into it. But I would still love to be here. It’s a second home. We love it. Florida, the kids love it down here.
“I understand it as a business, but after everything that happened this year, we’re family now and I appreciate them for everything they did. Just rocking with me, sticking with me through everything. Hopefully it’s not, but I understand it is a real possibility, but I hope it’s not.”
Barrett managed to record an interception, two pass deflections, three forced fumbles, 4.5 sacks, and 33 combined tackles in the regular season. Moreover, he wasn’t able to make himself felt during the Bucs’ two playoff games,
While it does look like Shaq Barrett is headed out of Tampa, there would be several NFL teams who would still be interested in acquiring a proven winner to shore up their linebacker room with him. The presence and experience he brings to an NFL locker room would be invaluable to any team looking to strengthen their defensive unit.
