Should the Tampa Bay Buccaneers explore other quarterback options in free agency or stick with Baker Mayfield? If you ask an NFC personnel evaluator, the answer is simple: it’s the latter.
While it’s definitely intriguing for a team like the Buccaneers to explore free agency amid their quarterback questions, it’s important to remember that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side. After Mayfield’s success with the team in 2023 season, it’s really hard to find someone who is an upgrade over him–especially since Mayfield works well with the current team.
That is exactly what an NFL personnel evaluator–who talked to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN–highlighted when making a case why the Buccaneers should re-sign Mayfield. The likes of Russell Wilson and Justin Fields could be available for the taking, but since the two don’t really scream as major improvements from Mayfield, it’s not really the best option.
Here’s what Fowler wrote while predicting the Buccaneers to run it back with the former Cleveland Browns no. 1 pick:
Mayfield appeared destined for a career as a bridge QB/journeyman before rewriting the script in Tampa Bay. Not only did Mayfield guide the Bucs to the playoffs, but he threw for 686 yards in two playoff games, the league high through the divisional round.
Teams are only as good as their options at any given position, and Mayfield looks like Tampa’s best.
“I’m not sure it makes sense to go after someone else like Russell Wilson or Justin Fields when I’m not sure that’s a substantial upgrade,” an NFC personnel evaluator said. “Mayfield isn’t perfect, but you can win games with him. He’s streaky, but when he gets hot, he can produce like a top-10 guy.”
Baker Mayfield certainly deserves to return to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He signed a one-year, prove-it deal with the team last season, and they got more than what they paid for.
The Bucs were supposed to be a rebuilding team, but instead, they made it all the way to the divisional round before losing to the Detroit Lions.
Todd Bowles and Co. were really close, and it might be bizarre not to ride that momentum. With the team filled with positivity and optimism with Mayfield leading the way, there’s not much benefit to letting him walk away, especially when the options aren’t great.
Baker Mayfield’s Projected Contract If Tampa Bay Buccaneers Re-Sign Him
Sure enough, if the Tampa Bay Buccaneers want to bring back Baker Mayfield, they have to pay more than just $4 million. A lot more.
According to the current projections, Mayfield has an average market value of $27.1 million, per Spotrac. Of course he would look for a long-term commitment as well, so the Bucs will need to shell out at least $108.5 million for four years.
Considering what Mayfield has done, however, he has earned every bit of that.
