Despite housing one of the most lethal receiver rooms in the NFL, the Seattle Seahawks hosted a former highly-touted pass-catcher on Tuesday. According to NFL insider Ari Meirov, Seattle welcomed former second-round pick and lengthy wideout Chase Claypool on a visit. The Seahawks are also in the process of welcoming NFL draft prospects to their facilities, including elite edge rusher Jared Verse, formerly of Florida State football.
Rumors about Claypool continue to swirl this offseason. Early this month, reports indicated the Saskatchewan Roughriders added Claypool to their exclusive negotiation list, allowing him to join the team this upcoming season. Saskatchewan would only make a premature move on Claypool if they believed there was a sliver of hope that the once top prospect could head north.
Chase Claypool: Visits Seattle Seahawks
Accompanied by a host of soon-to-be rookies, free agent wide receiver Chase Claypool made a notable appearance at the Seattle Seahawks facility on Tuesday. Claypool, the 49th overall pick in the 2020 draft, had a stellar career at Notre Dame before making his mark with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The six-foot-four, 239-pound receiver had an impressive start, amassing 121 receptions for 1,733 yards and 13 scores in his first two seasons. However, he faced a setback in 2022, recording only 311 receiving yards in eight games before being traded to the Chicago Bears for a future second-round pick (Joey Porter Jr.). He finished the season with a career-low 46 catches for 451 yards and one touchdown.
Claypool got off to a sluggish start in 2023, including being criticized for a low-effort performance in the home opener. Again, he made headlines in Week 4 for publicly expressing his displeasure with how the coaching staff used him. Chicago grew disinterested in Claypool, making him inactive before trading him and a 2025 seventh-round pick to the Miami Dolphins for a 2025 sixth-round pick. He finished last season with eight catches for 77 yards and a touchdown.
Seattle Seahawks: Starting Mike Macdonald Era
The Seattle Seahawks parted ways with their longtime head coach, Pete Carroll, after 14 seasons. They hired Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald in his place. Despite being a defensive-minded coach, the expectation is that the Seahawks will remain competent on offense. The NFC West club scored 21.4 points per game last season, the 17th-best mark in the NFL.
Seattle, led by quarterback Geno Smith, threw for nearly 4,000 yards as a team. The Seahawks have a genuine triple threat at receiver with Tyler Lockett, D.K. Metcalf, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Lockett, a former All-Pro, led the team with 79 receptions, while Metcalf, a two-time Pro-Bowler, posted his third 1,000-yard season in five years. Meanwhile, Smith-Njigba is a former first-round pick entering his second season.
