The Seattle Seahawks surprised the entire league when they announced that they wouldn’t be keeping Super Bowl Champion Pete Carroll on as the teams head coach. Carroll had been the teams figurehead since he was hired in 2010 and has lead the team to multiple Super Bowl appearances and a Lombardi Trophy in 2013. While Carroll may be on his way out, his perfect replacement may be right around the corner.
Seahawks have Obvious Candidate to Pick in Head Coaching Search
After the team meets with several teams, there is an obvious choice as to who to replace Carroll in Seattle and that choice is Detroit Lions Head Coach Ben Johnson. While Detroit has improved on the defensive side of the ball, the real victory in the Motor City has been Johnson’s ability to maximize the talents of former first overall pick Jared Goff.
After a fairly middling career with the Los Angeles Rams, Goff has exploded onto the scene in Detroit this offseason as Johnson has utilized an effective running game backed with an excellent array of quick receivers capable of executing play action passes. In just a few seasons, Detroit went from being a perennial laughingstock to one of the most dominant teams in the NFL.
What makes a ton of sense is that the personnel in Detroit is similar to what Seattle has: an excellent running game, talented receivers and a value running back. After starting quarterback Geno Smith has shown in the past few seasons that he still has it, what better option is there to maximize what this offense has and get to the next level in a stumbling NFC West.
Last season, Seattle failed to take advantage of having one of the best wide receiver trios in the NFL with DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett and emerging superstar Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Imagine how dominant the Seattle offense would be if they could finally figure out the balance between powering the ball down a teams throat with Kenneth Walker III and then pulling it and throwing it up deep for Metcalf. The possibilities are clearly open for Johnson.
On top of that, the job has to be appealing to Johnson because he would be able to learn from one of the best to ever to it in the Pacific Northwest. Carroll may have been pushed out of a job but he has established that he can make remarkable personnel decisions that would rival any general manager in the NFL. Johnson would have a confidante to help him go through his first draft and his first offseason who frankly thinks very similarly to the way Johnson does to begin with. This could be an absolute slam dunk for Seattle if they seize it before another team takes a grasp of Johnson before they do.
