There are plenty of intriguing storylines surrounding the San Francisco 49ers after losing to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bow LVIII. While there are plenty of question marks surrounding the team, one of the biggest lies with Brandon Aiyuk.
The wide receiver has proven throughout the 2023 season that he’s deserving of WR1 money, and he’s entering a contract year with a Super Bowl contender. However, he posted a cryptic message on social media after their Super Bowl loss that provided fans a clue about what’s happening behind the scenes.
Brandon Aiyuk has become too expensive for the San Francisco 49ers to keep
All 49ers’ Grant Cohn wrote a compelling piece about what the San Francisco 49ers will probably do with the team’s #11, and his thought about the matter scares the Niners faithful the most.
Brandon Aiyuk will probably be traded in the coming offseason.
He gave one compelling reason, and it’s something that ties into Aiyuk’s mysterious social media story:
Aiyuk never will lead the NFL in receiving yards if he plays for the 49ers, because they simply don’t throw him the ball frequently enough. On another team, he would easily get more than 10 targets per game. But on the 49ers, he got 6.5 targets per game this past season.
What’s the point of paying more than $25 million a year for a wide receiver you use like a second or third option?
Aiyuk wasn’t used as much during the team’s February 11 defeat, and the situation may not change in the coming months.
Is the 49ers releasing Brandon Aiyuk the right move?
If you look at the current roster situation for the Niners, it would make sense for the Niners to ship Aiyuk to another team in exchange for draft capital or a capable player that could improve any of the positions they need to be addressed.
However, one reason why San Francisco may want to hold back on cutting ties with Aiyuk has to do with their QB. He has an incredible partnership with Brock Purdy, and it easily shows on the field and in the stat sheet. Aiyuk has 1342 receiving yards in 2023, easily leading the entire NFL. Meanwhile, Deebo Samuel only has 892 to his name.
Moreover, it was evident during their final game of the season that Aiyuk wasn’t the problem. Samuel was targeted 11 times but only has a measly 33 yards to his name. Meanwhile, Aiyuk has 49 receiving yards on six targets.
The Niners will have to make a tough choice regardless of the direction they choose to go for 2024. Fans can only hope that they keep the right player to keep their championship window open for as long as possible.
