After the San Francisco 49ers lost in this year’s Super Bowl to the Kansas City Chiefs with a score of 25-22, many players in the league took to social media to speak their mind on the game. One of which was Brandon Aiyuk, who did not seem content with how the 49ers ran their offense during Super Bowl 58.
49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk Caught 3 Balls for 49 Yards in Super Bowl 58
Aiyuk, who caught 75 balls for 1,342 yards and 7 touchdowns in 2023 took a leap this season and became San Francisco’s top weapon on the outside. However, he was not able to get as involved in the Super Bowl only catching 3 balls for 49 yards. Aiyuk did not receive more than 3 catches in any game during this year’s playoff run and was not used as a main factor.

Not being utilized caused frustration and Aiyuk turned to his Instagram account to send a cryptic message, reading, “Don’t forget what got you there”. While the message doesn’t specifically point out anyone, he is trying to imply that the pass game was not used to their full potential like it was all regular season. Even members of Aiyuk’s family have taken to social media to call San Francisco out.
The 49ers had multiple 1,000-yard pass catchers in Aiyuk and George Kittle and quarterback Brock Purdy led the league in passer rating during the regular season. Purdy managed to throw for 255 yards and a touchdown in this year’s Super Bowl, but was not able to get the ball downfield and struggled on third down, only converting 3 of 12 attempts.
Will Aiyuk Play for the 49ers Next Season?
Aiyuk is heading into the last year on his rookie deal and the 49ers will have to make a decision on his future with the franchise. Exercising the fifth-year option seems like a no brainer given his improvement since being drafted in 2020, but paying him a second contract will be difficult considering the amount of All-Pro talent that is on roster already and how limited the cap space is.
