Even though the San Francisco 49ers won against Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets, there were several plays that could have used a little more work from the latter. Turns out, NFL legend Peyton Manning had a problem with wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk and his performance on the field during that match.
The 49ers spoiled Rodgers’ highly anticipated return to the field, defeating the New York Jets with a score 32-19. Rodgers, who was making his first appearance since suffering a torn Achilles last season, threw for 167 yards and one touchdown but also recorded an interception.
The 49ers dominated the game with a strong rushing attack, led by Jordan Mason, who rushed for 147 yards and a touchdown in his first career start. Despite missing star running back Christian McCaffrey, San Francisco’s offensive line controlled the game, allowing Mason to shine. Deebo Samuel contributed with a short touchdown run, and kicker Jake Moody tied a franchise record by making six field goals.
San Francisco took command after halftime, scoring on consecutive drives to extend their lead. The Jets struggled offensively, failing to gain momentum after an initial touchdown drive that featured Rodgers completing several key passes. However, New York’s offense stalled, and they were unable to keep pace with the 49ers.
Rodgers managed to connect with Allen Lazard for a touchdown late in the game, marking his first touchdown pass in over 600 days. Despite the loss, Rodgers showed glimpses of his former self, although issues with mobility were evident. The 49ers’ defense effectively contained the Jets, showcasing their strength and depth early in the season.
Peyton Manning Roasts San Francisco 49ers’ Brandon Aiyuk Over Dropped Pass
Aiyuk was recently made the recipient of a Peyton Manning roast due to a play he didn’t work hard on during the 49ers game against New York. This can be seen in an article written by Andrew Gould for The Spun.
“Get signed. Get in training camp. There’s a reason for training camp. You need it. We need the reps,” Peyton said, via Awful Announcing. “Get those contracts done earlier so he can get in training camp [so] we don’t drop balls on opening night.”
Eli acknowledged that those situations “happen in camp” before Peyton continued his rant.
“You’re still catching balls at a high school field from some quarterback that’s 45 years old, my age,” Peyton continued. “You’re not catching balls from your quarterback. Get signed, get in camp, and we don’t drop the ball.”
In the closing moments of the first half, Aiyuk failed to secure a pass from Brock Purdy in the end zone, leading the 49ers to settle for a field goal instead of a touchdown, putting them ahead 16-7 at halftime. After a summer holdout, the WR signed a four-year, $120 million extension with the team on August 29. Eli Manning described the 49ers star as “a little rusty,” while his brother offered a more intense criticism.
It remains to be seen whether Aiyuk can get back to form in the coming days and prove Manning wrong. In any case, San Francisco needs him to be in top shape and his best form if they want to return to the Super Bowl next year.
