Depending on how you look at Super Bowl LVIII, the San Francisco 49ers have one of the toughest offseasons to undergo. They almost won the big game, but they fell short during some of the game’s biggest moments.
Due to this, it could be tough to find the right players who will help the Niners take the extra step and win the Lombardi next year. They know more than anyone that it will be tough to make it back to the big dance, so they need to make sure all of their offseason signings will contribute to the team’s ultimate goal of winning the Super Bowl.
The Athletic’s Matt Barrows and David Lombardi wrote a detailed piece that identified the likeliest players that the team will target in free agency.
Which San Francisco 49ers players are entering free agency?
The list of upcoming free agents for the 49ers in 2024 are headlined by defensive players. Randy Gregory and Chase Young are unlikely going to return to the team, with Young already linked to the New York Giants.
Other defensive players who are unrestricted free agents include Jevon Kinlaw, Oren Burks, Sebastian Joseph-Day, and Demtrius Flannigan-Fowles among others.
While you can expect the Niners to at least try and keep some of the players on the list, they’ll likely be aggressively shopping for a defensive end once free agency opens.
Top talents the San Francisco 49ers can target in 2024 free agency
At the top of the list of players the Niners will target in 2024 is De Danielle Hunter. While he was not the best option when Josh Allen and Brian Burns weren’t given the franchise tag and is older than the two, he showcased to Kyle Shanahan that he can still play.
During the Minnesota Vikings‘ Week 7 win over the Niners, Hunter was an outstanding presence in the pass rush. He also finished the season with 16.5 sacks and 23 tackles for loss.
If they think the competition for Hunter is too high, they can opt for Houston Texans‘ Jonathan Greenard. He had 12.5 sacks for the Texans last season and is younger than Hunter.
Other potential targets the San Francisco 49ers can go for are Robert Hunt, Ezra Cleveland, and Bryce Huff among others.
