The San Francisco 49ers are the first team to go 3-0 this season after another impressive win on Thursday against the New York Giants. Niners star quarterback Brock Purdy kept his foot on the gas for this one as he led his team to a dominant and eventful 30-12 victory against a lackluster Giants side, who have now given up a total of 70 points in their first two losses of the campaign.
Brock Purdy Puts In Another Solid Performance for San Francisco 49ers
Purdy turned in another eye-opening effort on Thursday, completing 25-of-37 passes for a season career-high 310 yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions. At this point, 49ers fans have virtually forgotten all about Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance. There’s a new sheriff in town, and he’s been living up to all the preseason hype in his first full year as San Francisco’s QB1.
Right now, it would not be an overstatement to say that Purdy has already established himself as one of the top quarterbacks in the entire league. The scary part here is that the 23-year-old is just getting started.
Brock Purdy Made the Giants Pay
New York came into the game with a pretty straightforward game plan against Purdy. As pointed out by Michael David Smith of PFT, the Giants blitzed the opposing quarterback 33 times out of the 39 times Purdy dropped back for a pass. That’s a whopping 84.6 percent blitz rate, which according to Next Gen Stats, is the most in the history of their statistical database.
Unfortunately for the Giants, their bold game plan did not work. Even Purdy himself admits that New York made a mistake in their decision to blitz him all night long.
“When they’re blitzing, we can capitalize on offense with some big plays, and we had some stuff dialed up for what we were going to do when they did blitz,” Purdy said after the game, via Newsday.
He’s not wrong, and Purdy has the numbers to prove it.
Be that as it may, the young quarterback is keeping everything in check amid the Niners’ blistering start to the season.
“I don’t want to get caught up in stats and stuff,” Purdy said. “There’s some throws out there that I missed.”
If there’s one thing you can say about Brock Purdy, it’s that he’s certainly not the type who enjoys resting on his laurels.
