The San Francisco 49ers and head coach Kyle Shanahan are interviewing former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley for their defensive coordinator position.
Along with Staley, Shanahan and the 49ers are interviewing their defensive pass game coordinator Nick Sorensen as well as their own safeties coach Daniel Bullocks.
Brandon Staley disappointed as a HC but was elite as a DC which could help the San Francisco 49ers
Brandon Staley’s stint as the head coach of the Los Angeles Charges left many disappointed. He left behind what many considered a disconnected locker room on his way out. A team source described the situation as deeper than Staley in an article from ESPN.
“Essentially, when you fire a guy, you’re saying that there’s a guy out there right now who is going to set our team up with better chances to win the Super Bowl in their second or first year with a brand new team than Staley would in his third or fourth year or fifth year?” a team source said. “I’m not saying it’s impossible. I just feel like it’s unlikely. There are more issues here.”
Staley went 24-24 as the head coach of the Los Angeles Charges and was 5-9 when he was fired after an embarrassing 63-21 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, who are a division rival.

Staley was also at the helm for one of the most embarrassing playoff losses in NFL history. The Chargers were up 27-0 and gave up the third-largest comeback in NFL playoff history to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Before coaching the Chargers, Staley was the defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams, who share a division with the San Francisco 49ers. Staley led the Rams to the No. 1 defense in the league as the only team to allow under 300 total points on the season.
They allowed the least amount of passing yards as well as the third-least amount of rushing yards. Staley only has one year of experience as an NFL DC, but he proved his worth in that position in 2020.
The San Francisco 49ers firing of former DC Steve Wilks was controversial
Kyle Shanahan and the San Francisco 49ers decided to let go of defensive coordinator Steve Wilks after a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl. Wilks and the 49ers defense held star quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs to just 19 points in regulation.
Wilks also led the 49ers defense to No. 3 scoring defense in the NFL. They were ranked No. 8 in total yards allowed and their rushing defense was No. 3 as well.
The 49ers’ weak point was their passing defense. They were 14th in passing yards allowed and they gave up an average of 227 passing yards per game during the playoffs. Still, many fans think the firing of Wilks was done to shift blame from the real issues that caused the 49ers to lose the Super Bowl.
How could Steve Wilks let this happen? https://t.co/xgA7Ls1l4C

firing Steve Wilks to hire Brandon Staley would certainly be a choice https://t.co/uNMnPsPgi2

Steve Wilks wasn’t the problem Kyle Shanahan is. You couldn’t score on the biggest stage with the best weapons in all of football. pic.twitter.com/K6ZFDwH6fK
