Former Indianapolis Colts Kicker Rodrigo Blankenship signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Thursday according to NFL Reporter Ian Rapoport.
Blankenship completed 80 percent of his kicks in 2022. Since 2020, Blankenship has made 47 field goals out of 56 tries. Blankenship was undrafted and played college football at Georgia.
Blankenship lasted kicked for the Arizona Cardinals on October 20, 2022. Blankenship made two field goals and two extra points. Blankenship was waived by the Cardinals in November.
Blankenship was Indy’s top kicker for a couple of seasons. However, injuries and poor kicking cost Blankenship’s job with Indianapolis.
Another Chance
Blankenship’s career has been rocky since his departure from Indianapolis. Blankenship has struggled to stay on an NFL roster. The Buccaneers have granted Blankenship another chance. Blankenship must prove he is a starting kicker in the NFL.
Former Buccaneers Kicker Ryan Succop was released in March. Succop made 31 field goals and 24 extra points.
Familiar Competition
Blankenship shouldn’t shy away from competition during training camp. Blankenship will compete with Chase McLaughlin. Blankenship and McLaughlin competed in Indianapolis. McLaughlin took over after Blankenship was cut by Indianapolis.
Familiar competition should excite Blankenship. We will see what happens when the season kicks off.
