The New York Giants were doing a lot of extensive homework on quarterbacks before the 2024 NFL Draft occurred. New York did this because the quarterback situation was uncertain for them at that time. The Giants scouted Caleb Williams, J.J. McCarthy, Drake Maye, Jayden Daniels, and others.
There was a time when the New York Giants were trying to trade up from the sixth selection to the third selection in the 2024 NFL Draft with the New England Patriots. New England did not want to trade that pick away and they decided to keep it.

The Patriots selected Drake Maye from North Carolina with that selection. During the first four selections of the 2024 NFL Draft, it didn’t appear as a surprise to anyone.
New York Giants Draft Almost Changed Because the Minnesota Vikings Wanted To Trade Up and Draft Wide Receiver Malik Nabers

According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, the Minnesota Vikings tried to trade up with the Los Angeles Chargers for the fifth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Minnesota would have selected wide receiver Malik Nabers instead of quarterback J.J. McCarthy.
Had that occurred, Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson would have been traded to a different team, according to Charley Walters of the Pioneer Press. That would have changed the New York Giants’ draft plans completely.
The Chargers ultimately kept the fifth pick and took offensive tackle Joe Alt from Notre Dame. The Giants did take wide receiver Malik Nabers from LSU with the sixth-overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Had the Vikings made that trade, New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen would have had an interesting decision to make. Would they have taken wide receiver Rome Odunze from Washington, quarterback J.J. McCarthy, or traded back?
They probably would have selected wide receiver Rome Odunze from Washington with that selection because they need a wide receiver in the worst way. Odunze would have been a good selection for the New York Giants franchise and also quarterback Daniel Jones.

One of the reasons why Minnesota decided to attempt this is because Justin Jefferson is entering the final year of his contract and has yet to sign a contract extension. A potential duo of Malik Nabers and Jordan Addison could have been interesting for the Minnesota Vikings.
Malik Nabers will most likely be the better player in the long run. LSU has a great track record of producing great receivers in the NFL. The New York Giants should be thankful that the Minnesota Vikings and the Los Angeles Chargers did not pull the trigger on a trade on draft night.
