Former Green Bay Packers wide receiver Randall Cobb was the victim of a major blunder by his new employer, ESPN. The veteran player is set to join the SEC Network for the upcoming college football season as an analyst for the ESPN product.
ESPN wrote that Randall Cobb retired after the 2023 season

As previously discussed on GH, ESPN made an announcement that Cobb had retired following the 2023 season. The initial press release stated twice that Cobb retired:
“Cobb retired after the 2023 NFL season and was inducted into the Kentucky Pro Sports Hall of Fame shortly before his retirement”
The Former Green Bay Packers WR was undecided this season

The timeline of Cobb’s retirement was confusing, as the wide receiver had not officially announced his retirement to the league or on social media. In June, Cobb said he hadn’t decided to retire, but no teams were asking for his services:
“I haven’t made any kind of decision,” Cobb said via the Milwaukee Sentinels Journal, “someone’s got to want you, too.”
“Everybody ages out of this league at some point,” Cobb acknowledged. “A matter of when, how. I’m kind of in that position now, if I want to go out on my own terms, I can. And I’ll be happy.”
Cobb is still an active free agent

ESPN has since erased the sentence in the press release claiming Cobb has retired. Per the editor’s note:
The original version of this release shared that Randall Cobb had retired following the 2023. He is still active and that sentence has been removed.
This is a bad time for Cobb’s new employer to make the mistake. Training camp is starting this week for NFL teams, and Cobb would apparently like to entertain offers from front offices needing receivers this season. Teams could be less inclined to take a chance on a player they think of as retired.
