REPORT: The Houston Texans Receive an Encouraging Injury Update on their Offensive Lineman Ahead of 2024 Season

The Houston Texans interior offensive line battled many injuries last season. Only one position, right guard, had one starter start for the entire season. Center had two players start, while left guard, on the other hand, had four players start, including their versatile lineman, who battled two separate injuries.

Tytus Howard did not have a great 2023 campaign because he battled two injuries. He suffered a broken hand during practice and missed the first four games. Howard returned in Week 5 and started the next seven games at left guard due to injuries. Unfortunately, he suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 12.

He had his left knee fixed during the regular season.

Howard underwent surgery to fix his left knee near the end of November. He progressed nicely but missed offseason workouts, including OTAs and mandatory minicamp.

Head coach DeMeco Ryans gave an injury update on Howard during March and whether he’ll be ready for training camp.

“Tytus is recovering,” Ryans said. “He’s doing well. We should get him back for training camp.”

Will he be ready for training camp?

Texans rookies and veterans reported to training camp on Wednesday, July 17. Tytus Howard was one of the players who reported to training camp. According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC2, he attended the first day of practice and received first-team reps at right tackle, his natural position.

Ryans was happy to see him practicing.

“It was good to see Tytus back,” Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said. “Missed some time with the surgery, so good to see him back healthy and having an opportunity to compete.”

Howard is in the first year of his 3-year, $56 million contract extension he signed during the 2023 offseason and will be an unrestricted free agent in 2027. If he plays well, he should be able to play out his contract. However, if he struggles or battles an injury, he could be a cap casualty in 2025 or 2026.
