The Las Vegas Raiders had a better season than most people originally thought considering they lost a head coach and a wide receiver during the season. Players like Hunter Renfrow and Darren Waller shined last season being the main targets quarterback, Derek Carr, would aim for. However, unlike Renfrow, Waller hasn’t gotten a contract extension yet with training camp already here. Which begs the question, why have the Raiders waited so long?
Waller signed a four year deal with the Raiders in 2019 for $29.8 million. Taken into account what he has done over the seasons, Waller has earned every penny and then some. In the past three years, Waller has completed 252 receptions and 3,006 receiving yards. Placing him only second to Travis Kelce who is widely considered the best tight end in the NFL. So if Waller is second best, why aren’t the Raiders jumping to keep him?
Is a Contract Extension in the Books for Waller?
Waller has been a secret weapon for the Raiders putting in 1,100 plus yards in 2019 and 2020, but let’s face it, last season could’ve been better for the tight end. In 2021, Waller finished with 55 catches, 655 yards and only 2 touchdowns. Not that impressive right? But it’s important to note that Waller had a back injury, a knee injury and was COVID listed for 5 games which impacted his stats greatly. But you can’t deny the fact that Waller is incredibly important to the Silver and Black.
Renfrow and Carr both got contract extensions valued at $32.3 million for two years and $121.5 million for three years, respectively. In my opinion it’s only a matter of time for Waller to get his contract extension. He’s too much of a valuable player, not just for the Raiders, but for the league.
