The Pittsburgh Steelers are a pretty stable team with Mike Tomlin leading the way. However, while they have Kenny Pickett as quarterback, it’s uncertain if he’s really the QB that the team can build around for the future.
With that said, the Steelers might want to consider trading for Justin Fields if the Chicago Bears make him available for trade. While he hasn’t had much success in Windy City, a change in scenery and a competitive coach might be what he needs to reach his unrealized potential.
Considering that Fields’ current value isn’t that high, it might be the best time to make a move for him.
Why the Chicago Bears Could Trade Justin Fields
The Bears have the no. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, and they are largely expected to draft USC Trojans star Caleb Williams.
Williams is one of the best QB prospects in recent memory, and it would be foolish for the Bears not to make a move for him considering their constant failure with Fields.
While Fields is a legitimate dual-threat quarterback with plenty of room to grow, the Bears might not be the right fit for him. Not to mention that as things currently stand, Williams appears to be the better option as quarterback to build around for Chicago.
According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, there is a belief that the Bears would ask for second- and third-round picks in a deal for Fields. Considering that the Ohio State QB is just 24 years old, that might not be a bad price at all for someone with high upside.
Why the Pittsburgh Steelers Need To Trade for Justin Fields
Again, the Steelers’ QB situation is a big question mark. And if they can get a chance to trade for a potential franchise quarterback, they should take it.
In a recent article, Bleacher Report floated the idea of the Steelers acquiring Fields from the Bears, noting that it’s one of the moves the can reshape the league in 2024. The article noted that Fields is someone that has the “ability to become a star” who could very well thrive in a Steelers team could give him plenty of opportunities to grow while winning.
The Pittsburgh Steelers find themselves in a tough position. It sure as heck doesn’t appear the long-term quarterback answer is on the roster, but they also keep winning enough that they lack the draft capital to land a primo passing prospect in this year’s draft. Meanwhile, they remain competitive and talented enough to reach the postseason, but they also lack salary-cap space.
You know what they need? A cheap, talented quarterback with upside who could very well come into his own in a new setting with a stable franchise.
We just described Justin Fields, who at 24 is a phenomenal young athlete with the ability to become a star but may have worn out his welcome after three years of limited improvement as a passer in Chicago.
If the Bears decide to go down a new quarterback path with the top pick in the draft, they could very well decide to deal Fields out of the conference to a Steelers team that has little reason not to give him a shot.
It remains to be seen if the Steelers will make a move for Fields, but it’s certainly something worth exploring.
