The Philadelphia Eagles hope they can improve their secondary, which was abysmal last season. They allowed the 2nd-most completions, passing yards, and passing touchdowns.
Injuries to two of their top three cornerbacks could be why their secondary struggled. Darius Slay missed five games with a knee injury that required arthroscopic surgery near the end of the season, and Avonte Maddox missed 13 with a torn pectoral muscle.
The Eagles will have their top three cornerbacks (Slay, Maddox, and Bradberry) back for another offseason, and on top of that, they drafted two corners in the first two rounds, drafting Quinyon Mitchell 22nd overall and Cooper DeJean 40th overall. They also expect their four-year veteran back in time for camp.
The Philadelphia Eagles expect their young cornerback to be ready for training camp
Zech McPhearson suffered a torn right Achilles in their preseason matchup against the Cleveland Browns and sat out for the entire 2023 season. He missed voluntary organized team activities (OTAs) and mandatory minicamp but will likely be ready for training camp.
He is at 100%.
Zech McPhearson fully recovered from his Achilles injury
“I’m 100 percent, man,” he said. “It’s been a long road to recovery, but I’m so thankful. Sitting out this year has just taught me so much, especially on the mental side of the game, allowing me to see the game from a different perspective.
“But I’m just glad to be back. My body’s feeling good, I’m feeling good. I just wanna go out there and compete. I got so much built up inside me. I got a chip on my shoulder. It’s a lot going on outside, but I block out all that noise.”
He will fight for a roster spot.
Zech McPhearson will fight for a roster spot
According to Ourlads, the Eagles currently have 12 cornerbacks on their roster and will likely keep 5-7 on their 53-man roster. McPhearson will have to fight for a spot, competing against Isaiah Rodgers, Eli Ricks, Josh Jobe, Mario Goodrich, Parry Nickerson, Tyler Hall, and Shon Stephens.
Will McPhearson make the 53-man roster this fall?
