The Dallas Cowboys have a lot of drama surrounding the quarterback position entering the 2024 NFL season. One of the biggest stories is the contract talks of Dak Prescott. He is entering the final year of his contract.
Prescott has no plans to hold out of training camp despite his contract issues. However, wide receiver CeeDee Lamb will most likely not report for the start of NFL training camp for the Dallas Cowboys and he is one of the best wide receivers in the NFL.
If the Cowboys were to miss the playoffs this season, could it be the end of Dak Prescott in Dallas, Texas? It will depend on whether he already has a contract extension by then or not.
Dallas Cowboys Quarterback Cooper Rush’s Stock Has Plummeted During Offseason Workouts
Entering training camp, Cooper Rush is listed second on the Dallas Cowboys depth chart behind Dak Prescott. It will be a backup quarterback battle between Cooper Rush and Trey Lance in training camp.
According to Sayre Bedinger of thelandryhat.com, he believes that Rush’s stock is plummeting after offseason workouts right before training camp. Cooper Rush is one of four players on the Dallas Cowboys roster who will need to be better in training camp.
There is a chance that Rush may not make the 53-man roster for the Dallas Cowboys this season. Sayre Bedinger said:
“If there was a pie chart showing all of the offseason talk about the Cowboys’ quarterback position, it would probably be about 85 percent surrounding Dak Prescott and his contract situation, 15 percent on the progression of Trey Lance, and absolutely nothing about Cooper Rush.
Maybe that’s a good thing.
But the potential emergence of Trey Lance isn’t great news for Cooper Rush because the Cowboys might be able to move on from him and save over $2 million on the salary cap. Rush has been a quality backup for Dallas but if they’re serious about Trey Lance, then they need to ramp up his practice reps during the week, and Rush — 31 years old this season — deserves a shot to be someone else’s backup.”
Cooper Rush and Trey Lance are also in the final year of their contracts. Lance was the former third overall pick out of North Dakota State in the 2021 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers. San Francisco traded him last year and this was because of the emergence of Brock Purdy.
Could one of the reasons why the Dallas Cowboys didn’t give Dak Prescott a new contract yet is because they might like Trey Lance? Lance is only 24 years old and would benefit from being the backup quarterback for Dallas this season.
