The Philadelphia Eagles made headlines this season with one notable play. It was nicknamed the “Tush Push”, with the offensive line fighting for just enough yards on short conversions. This allowed QB Jalen Hurts to perform many successful quarterback sneak plays.
However, some people thought the Eagles had an unfair advantage with this play. Others thought it put players at risk for a play that looked “boring” on TV. Now, a member of the NFL Competition Committee revealed the Committee’s sentiment on the “Tush Push.”
“Tush Push” Here to Stay
“Pro Football Talk Live” conducted an interview with Troy Vincent this morning. For those of you who do not know, Vincent is the NFL Executive VP of Football Operations. Vincent made it very clear during this interview how the Committee felt about the idea of banning the “Tush Push” play:
“Don’t punish a team that strategically does it well.” -Troy Vincent
Philadelphia Eagles’ Fourth Down Success
The Eagles had resounding success with this play. Philadelphia was nearly unstoppable on fourth down conversions this past season compared to the rest of the NFL. The Eagles led the league in this category, converting 67.86% of the time. To put that in perspective, only 15 teams in the NFL converted fourth downs more than 50% of the time.
Philadelphia Eagles Moving Forward
Will the Eagles continue to use this play often in 2024? Well, this depends on a few factors. First, we have to see if the rest of the league adapts to stopping it.
Second, we have to see if new offensive coordinator Kellen Moore will want to use this play as often. Finally, we need to see if the Eagles get most of their offensive personnel back. At the time of writing, it is still uncertain as to whether C Jason Kelce will retire or not.
