Darius Slay doesn’t want to see his Philadelphia Eagles teammates sit out the final game of the regular season. For him, the whole team doesn’t deserve to rest.
The Eagles cornerback definitely means well, though. After all, considering the performance they have shown in the second half of the season, they really can’t afford to be complacent.
Philly has already secured a spot in the playoffs, and with the top seed in the NFC out of reach, the only thing they could do now is claim the NFC East division title. But that’s also something they don’t have complete control over, as they need the Dallas Cowboys to lose in Week 18 as well to have a chance.
Considering their slim chances of winning the division title as well, some might think that the Eagles might be better off sitting out their starters so they can stay healthy in time for the Wild Card round of the playoffs.
While that doesn’t make sense, Slay doesn’t totally agree with it. According to the 33-year-old vet, resting and sitting out games is the last thing they need considering how bad they have played so far.
“No. We ain’t playing great enough to sit down and we need momentum for the playoffs,” Slay responded when asked if the Eagles should sit their veterans to keep them healthy for the playoffs, via Zach Berman of PHLY.
“I know everybody is worried about their bodies, but on this team, everybody knows in their heart that we’ve go to go out there and play a complete, clean game. We’ve got to get going. Ain’t no way we can sit down. But that is up to coach.”
Darius Slay has a point, though. The Philadelphia Eagles have lost four of their last five games, all after starting the season with an 11-1 record. With such ugly streak, there’s no way Nick Sirianni’s men can feel confident heading to the playoffs.
Darius Slay’s Philadelphia Eagles Are Struggling Big Time
Early in the year, the Philadelphia Eagles were on their way to topping the NFC. Quarterback Jalen Hurts was even highly touted to win MVP.
All those hopes quickly vanished after they lost to the San Francisco 49ers in Week 13, which started a three-game skid before they beat the New York Giants on Christmas to end the slide. Nonetheless, they went back to their old habits in Week 17, bowing down to the hopeless Arizona Cardinals.
That loss speaks volumes on how bad they are playing. The Cardinals were 3-12 entering the contest and one of the worst teams in the NFL this 2023. For a team with playoff aspirations, it was such an epic meltdown.
At 11-5 entering Week 18, the Eagles can still top the division. But they will need the Cowboys to lose to the Washington Commanders, which seems unlikely considering that Dak Prescott and America’s Team know very well the implications of a loss.
Hopefully, Darius Slay and the rest of Philly can use Week 18 to get back on track before the playoffs. They really can’t afford to rest.
