The Philadelphia Eagles have a lot of rebuilding to do after they crashed and burned out of Super Bowl contention in 2023. While this puts a lot of pressure on head coach Nick Siriani, GM Howie Roseman also has plenty of wheeling and dealing to do to provide a revamped roster that could compete in the NFC.
One of the biggest areas that they need to address is the defensive side of the ball as the team simply failed to stop their opponents from scoring. Their lack of a proper defense was especially evident during their Wild Card loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
However, the offense also leaves a lot to be desired, and the team should be able to keep up with the conference’s most exciting offenses.
The question now lies in how Roseman will transform the team during the upcoming offseason to make them Super Bowl favorites again. Glenn Erby of Eagles Wire noted a couple of important positions that would need a bit of a revamp:
A change in the Philadelphia Eagles secondary may be in order
James Bradberry fell off during the 2023 season. While he had 39 solo tackles, his singular interception made him an expendable asset in the Philadelphia Eagles roster.
It would be tough for Roseman to flip him to a usable reinforcement in the secondary, and the hit on the dead cap may be too much for the team’s salary cap.
However, they have players in the secondary who could use a couple of touches. Bradberry might be among the first to go if Roseman wants to focus on the secondary.
The linebacker position is also a cause of concern
Another sore point for the Philadelphia Eagles fans was the quality of linebacker play during the 2023 season. Nakobe Dean was a particular highlight as Roseman put his faith in the young linebacker. However, his 2023 has little to show for his GM’s trust (22 solo tackles and 0.5 sacks in five appearances).
Roseman’s LB tactic is being questioned, and it’s up to the changes he’ll make in the position to prove him right.
Choosing between Reddick and Sweat
The defense may have been trash late in the season, but both Haason Reddick and Josh Sweat are capable defenders for Philly. Reddick has 11.0 sacks and 29 solo tackles in 2023, while Sweat made 6.5 sacks, 30 solo tackles, and 2 forced fumbles.
Their cap space could only provide good money to one player, which makes it impossible for the two to stay with the Philadelphia Eagles. Roseman will have to be careful with this as it could spell the difference between Super Bowl contention and another rebuilding year.
