The New York Giants finished the 2024 NFL season with a 3-14 record and they have the third overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. The Giants have a lot of options with the third overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
New York could use some more help on the defensive line and pass-rushing department despite trading for Brian Burns last offseason from the Carolina Panthers. One of the biggest needs for the Giants this offseason is finding a franchise quarterback and also improving offensively.
Pro Football Focus Thomas Valentine Lists New York Giants Brian Burns As Most Improved Player For Team In 2024
Pro Football Focus writer Thomas Valentine lists New York Giants edge rusher Brian Burns as the team’s most improved player during the 2024 season. Valentine listed one most improved player for each team this past NFL regular season. Thomas Valentine said about Burns:
“The Giants traded a second-round pick for Brian Burns, hoping that he could inject some life into a pass-rush that was lacking juice. Burns hadn’t turned into the elite pass-rusher that the Panthers were hoping for, but he took considerable steps forward from his final season in Carolina. His sack totals remained the same, but Burns’ overall effectiveness improved. He had 61 pressures in his first season with the Giants, the second-highest total of his career, and the 13th-most in the NFL.
Burns thrived in creating negative plays for opposing offenses in general. His 42 stops in 2024 were a career-high and the second-most in the NFL, behind Jonathon Cooper, and 30 of those defensive stops came against the run, an area where Burns has particularly struggled in his career. Stark improvement for an edge rusher who has the potential to be one of the best in the NFL.”
Brian Burns this past season with the Giants recorded 42 tackles, 8.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and eight pass deflections. New York will have Burns under contract for another few seasons.
He was better last season than Kayvon Thibodeaux was. Thibodeaux also missed some time due to injury. The trade for Brian Burns was worth it for general manager Joe Schoen.
No Other Players On the Team Improved
A lot of rookies on the team showed progress in season one for the Giants, but no outside of year one in the NFL improved outside of Burns. There was some regression with some players on the roster as well. Some thought that Deonte Banks was going to take a jump in year two and he never did.
The Giants will need to fix its talent issue on the roster this offseason. New York will need to show massive improvement next season.
