The Kansas City Chiefs are 3-0, emerging from yet another close victory Sunday night over the Atlanta Falcons, but quarterback Patrick Mahomes isn’t satisfied.
Despite beginning the Chiefs’ bid for an unprecedented third consecutive Lombardi Trophy with three straight wins, Mahomes believes that there’s more he can do and that there is more Kansas City’s offense is capable of than they have shown so far this season.
“I’ll speak especially offensively to me, myself. I feel like I haven’t played very well, and that’s not a stats thing,” Mahomes told reporters Sunday night after escaping 22-17 against the Falcons.
Sunday night in Atlanta, Mahomes completed 26-of-29 passing attempts for 217 yards with two touchdown passes to one interception, while seeming to develop a rhythm with top receivers Rashee Rice and rookie Xavier Worthy.
Still, despite Rice and Worthy combining for 127 yards and a touchdown, Mahomes isn’t satisfied by the Chiefs’ early showing.
“I just feel like I’m missing opportunities whenever they’re out there and not throwing the ball in the exact spot I want it to be at,” Mahomes said. “So, it’s about me getting back to my fundamentals, putting our guys in the right position, and then we’ve got to execute at a higher level offensively. If teams are going to make us drive the field, we have to prove that we’re able to do that, and I’m sure we’ll get a lot of the same this next week with the Chargers.”
Mahomes led the Chiefs to a Super Bowl victory last season, despite Kansas City’s receivers leading the league in dropped passes and a general lack of consistency in the passing game. This season’s offense seems to be more effective and proficient, which could be bad news for the rest of the league if Mahomes winds up getting into the kind of rhythm he hopes to develop with his top weapons.
