Now It is official, The New England Patriots have moved on from legendary coach Bill Belichick and just one day later they signed Jerod Mayo to be the next head coach of the team. While fans have had many different opinions as to how to feel about such a quick move, NFL analyst Pat McAfee thinks this was a great decision for the Patriots.
While many fans think Mayo might bring more of the same, McAfee thinks it was great to move quickly and maintain stability for the organization after parting ways with a coach who had been there for 24 years. Mayo has only been a Patriot in his career as a player and as a coach and now head coach. So the Kraft family must know they have a proper leader in Mayo after having such a long time football relationship.
The Patriots still have many moves to make at GM, and for a new offensive coordinator perhaps, as with Belichick gone there are many holes to fill in the coaching staff. They also have the third overall pick and will probably look to get a new quarterback of the future in a draft that has many amazing prospects.
Pat McAfee Loves The New England Patriots Move At Head Coach
McAfee on his podcast praised the Patriots owner for this move saying this was a smart decision and must have been their plan for a while now. He was quoted saying:
“I like the way Kraft handled this quickly. We don’t need to be a team without a leader for a while. You know, we don’t need anybody in the building—strength staff, trainers, equipment managers—we don’t need them wondering what’s next, so them signing the succession plan last off-season and Bill being part of it.”
It was probably very smart to handle this as quickly as possible for the culture of the team, but Mayo might be just more of the same if they can’t get the offense together. Defensively, they should still be one of the best as they are getting back more players from injury next season.
Jerod Mayo will have a huge standard to live up to, as the Patriots have achieved some of the greatest success of any American franchise in these last 24 years. It does help that the team went 4-13 this past season so it wont be too difficult to do better than that. The team will need to make many more moves this offseason. So we will see who will be helping Mayo in many different coaching positions next season.
