What a wild run the past year has been for the Green Bay Packers both on and off the field. From the major decision to trade Aaron Rodgers to Jordan Love’s recent emergence as a legitimate franchise quarterback, there has never been a dull moment for the fans. Pat McAfee was one of the most critical media members about the Packers and what general manager Brian Gutekunst did with Rodgers.
Of course, a lot of that has to do with the close friendship that McAfee has with Rodgers. But, he was very critical of Gutekunst and thought the Packers were heading down a disastrous road moving on from a superstar like Rodgers.
Over the course of the first 13 weeks of the 2023 NFL season, the Packers appear to have made the right move. Rodgers tore his Achilles in his debut game for the New York Jets and Love has taken charge in Green Bay. He has the Packers at 6-6 and currently in the playoff picture in the crowded NFC.
Now, it appears that McAfee was wrong about his thoughts on the Packers’ decision-making.
Pat McAfee Issues Packers’ GM Brian Gutekunst An Apology
Recently, in a quote, McAfee admitted that he may have been wrong about the Packers’ general manager and the direction the franchise chose to go. His comments came after Love put together a masterful performance to lead Green Bay to a massive Week 13 win over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday Night Football.
“Hey, Gutekunst, I certainly questioned the moves. I certainly questioned the motives. I thought this guy wants to build his own ego, build his own hype, build his own legacy. They’re doing it. They beat the Chiefs on Sunday Night Football, and their schedule gets easier down the road here. I, personally, have to say, alright, seems like Gutey knew what they were doing.”
The Packers have been down this road before. Moving on from Brett Favre to Rodgers was a move that fans the media thought was ludicrous. When the franchise feels like they have a new star quarterback, they seem to be right.
Around the NFL, fans are bewildered about Love’s recent string of performances. Especially in the NFC North fan bases, there is anger that Green Bay may have found their third straight franchise quarterback with no gaps in between.
On the season, Love has completed 61.3 percent of his pass attempts for 2,866 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. He has also picked up 231 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.
Those numbers showcase a bright future ahead for the Packers. Moving on from Rodgers was not an easy decision, but it was one that needed to be made. Love is proving Gutekunst and the front office right for their belief in him.
