Panthers Key Stats
The Carolina Panthers completely revamped their offense going into this season as they start the slate fresh. They hired former quarterback Frank Reich as their head coach and traded for the first-overall pick to get quarterback Bryce Young to lead the franchise.
The free agency period was booming as they added wide receiver DJ Chark, wide receiver Adam Theilen and running back Miles Sanders to help Young dominate in the early going. They struggled a bit offensively last season as they finished 20th in the NFL with 20.4 points on 306.2 total yards per game.
Defensively, they added outside linebacker Justin Houston and defensive end Deshawn Williams to help a defense that ranked 19th last year. The biggest cause of concern is the fact Brian Burns may be out this game as he looks for a new contract. This team will need to show a lot of improvement on the defensive end of the field.
Falcons Key Stats
The Atlanta Falcons seem to be America’s Team by the looks of it as many people are expecting them to do well in the NFC South. After finishing last, they have handed the keys for the offense to second-year player quarterback Desmond Ridder, who has only had 75 pass attempts in his rookie season.
However, he has a lot of young talent offensively with wide receiver Drake London, tight end Kyle Pitts, running back/joker Cordarrelle Patterson and rookie running back Bijan Robinson. This offense was 15th in the sport last year with 21.5 points on 318.6 total yards of offense.
The defense looks to improve a bit as well as they allowed 22.7 points per game in 2022, which was 23rd. They traded for cornerback Jeff Okudah after releasing Casey Heyward. They also added some star power with defensive end Calais Campbell and linebacker Bud Dupree. This will be a great test for head coach Arthur Blank to see if this team can live up to the preseason hype.
Game Prediction
The last first-overall pick in the NFL draft to start Week 1 under center and win the game was David Carr in 2002. With the question marks at wide receiver for the Carolina Panthers right now, what should we believe in?
The Atlanta Falcons are keeping a majority of their offense together and improved on the defensive side of the ball. Even if Desmond Ridder struggles under center, the running game will be able to dominate. I’m not sure if Bryce Young can lead to 14 points and that makes me want to parlay this with the under.
For the purpose of this article though, go with the Atlanta Falcons to cover the spread pretty easily.
