The Carolina Panthers find themselves in the middle of a difficult situation when it comes to Brian Burns.  Burns, who is a two-time Pro Bowler and playing on his fifth-year rookie option this year, has reportedly never considered holding out in order to force a new contract.  However, that may have since changed as Burns is currently not participating with the team.

In the wake of Brian Burns missing team walkthroughs today, head coach Frank Reich refused to provide any details regarding his absence, including whether it was related to his contract with the team.   Reich: “Do I hope he’s there vs. Atlanta? Absolutely. But if he’s not there, I’m not worried about it. Just move forward.”  It was also reported that multiple teams have made an offer for the star defensive end.

The Chicago Bears And Los Angeles Rams Both Made A Massive Offer For Carolina Panthers’ Star Defensive End Brian Burns

According to Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team:

The Rams offered multiple 1st-round picks and more for Burns before last year’s trade deadline, only for Carolina to decline.

The Bears wanted Burns in offers for the No. 1 overall pick, but Carolina made it clear he’s off-limits.

The Panthers have been trying to strike a deal, but to no avail so far. Burns knows his value is high.

There is a high probability that Burns, 25, will land a deal that places him among pass-rushers. To achieve that, an annual average value of no less than $20M would be required. However, a figure closer to Myles Garrett’s $25M or Joey Bosa’s $27M could be in the cards (especially if Nick Bosa’s holdout results in an increase in average value). According to the latest report regarding Burns’ situation, significant progress was still needed regarding his extension talks.

It is highly like that Burns stays with the Panthers for two reasons.  The Panthers’ asking price may be way too high for any team in the league, and the Panthers seem to genuinely want Burns to say.  Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see what happens when the regular season actually starts.
