Brian Burns Bagged & Tagged
In the ongoing saga of contract discussions between standout pass rusher Brian Burns and the Carolina Panthers, a temporary resolution has emerged – albeit one primarily serving the interests of the Panthers.
According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport’s recent update, the Panthers have opted to utilize the franchise tag on their talented 25-year-old outside linebacker. This strategic move effectively bars Burns, who was nearing the end of his rookie contract, from exploring unrestricted free agency this offseason.
Despite initial optimism for a long-term agreement, negotiations between the two parties have hit a standstill. Burns himself acknowledged in early September that talks had been put on pause following unsuccessful attempts to secure a new deal over the summer.
Reports have surfaced indicating Burns’ desired annual compensation approaching the $30 million mark, positioning him among the top earners among edge defenders. In contrast, the Panthers were reportedly inclined to offer up to $27 million.
The recent surge in the NFL’s salary cap has also corresponded with an increase in the value of the franchise tag. As a linebacker, Burns stands to earn just over $24 million for the upcoming 2024 season if no new agreement materializes.
The clock is ticking for both the Panthers and Burns, with a deadline set for July 15 to hash out a mutually agreeable contract. Should negotiations remain fruitless by then, Burns will find himself playing under the franchise tag for the entirety of the 2024 season.
