Packers: Notable Players Remain on PUP List

A very exciting week one of training camp is in the books for the Green Bay Packers. Today starts the first week that the Packers will be going in full pads. The Packers go into their second week with a number notable players who remain on the PUP list.

    David Bakhtiari LT (Knee)

The Packers Pro-Bowl LT David Bakhtiari has had another procedure on his knee this off season which keeps him on the PUP list to start training camp. He describes the injury and the rehab as “a nightmare that (he) has to live.” The injury is so severe that doctors aren’t even repairing the original ACL tear. Bakhtiari describes it more as an inflammation problem:

“Structurally I’m good. I know it’s fine, that’s why no one ever saw me with a knee brace. There’s no mental hurdle I’m trying to get over. It’s just ‘Can the (expletive) thing work?’ People don’t understand the fluid thing. Talk to any nurse or doctor. I had one nurse tell me ‘That’s the most fluid I’ve ever pulled out of someone’s knee.’ and I’m like ‘Thank you?’”

He was seen running drills in training camp:

    Mason Crosby K (Knee)

The veteran kicker Mason Crosby had his knee scoped this off season. He states that it’s “wear and tear, different things” and that it’s “just an oil change.” Crosby usually takes preseason games off anyways, but missing the training camp reps on the PUP list may hurt the kicking unit in the long run.

    Elgton Jenkins OL (Knee)

Offensive lineman Elgton Jenkins tore his ACL in a game against the Vikings in 2021. Jenkins is one of the league’s most versatile offensive linemen; in his 2020 Pro-Bowl season, he started 12 games at LG, three at C, and one at RT. He remains on the PUP list but was seen running drills on the first day of training camp:

    Robert Tonyan TE (Knee)

Robert Tonyan tore his ACL in week 8 in 2021. Despite missing the rest of the season, the Packers resigned the fifth-year tight end for a one-year extension in March. Tonyan broke out in 2020 with 11 touchdowns. He was having a disappointing 2021 season prior to his injury. There is no news on the progress of his injury, but the Packers hope Tonyan can return to help soften the blow of Adams’ departure.

    Christian Watson WR (Knee) watson

Rookie Christian Watson injured his knee some point during OTAs. He elected to have surgery in the off season, so hopefully the injury doesn’t linger into the regular season. A player as raw as Watson cannot afford to miss training camp on the PUP list. He was drafted out of a run first small school that never threw the ball more than 303 times during his time with the team. He needs to build a rapport with Rodgers now in the off season to earn the quarterback’s trust.
