The first week of training camp has wrapped up for the Green Bay Packers. After much anticipation for the season, it was great to finally see some on the field production. Here are 3 takeaways from Packers training camp.
Romeo Doubs Impressing Early
Call me Juliet because I am in love with Romeo Doubs. The 4th round pick has done nothing but make big plays in the first week of training camp. Early on, he looks to have great hands and great positioning on his routes. The back shoulder touchdown catch was a beauty and Rodgers is speaking highly of him in post practice interviews. To give you an idea of how good Doubs’ training camp has been you look at the betting odds for Rookie of the Year. Before camp, Doubs was 1000-1. He is curently 35-1. Doubs has clearly been the number one story out of training camp.
The Defensive Line is a Force
This defensive line is going to be a problem for offenses this year. Rashan Gary has picked up right where he left off and Preston Smith has also looked strong. The interior line has had some great moments as well. Rodgers has been under pressure and being forced to roll out and make quicker throws. While the Packers secondary is strong, they are being helped by the pressure the line is able to put on. If teams decide to focus on Gary or Smith, they will get beat in other places on the line. The defensive line has shown out in Packers training camp.
Offensive Line Shuffle
With the injuries to Bakhtiari and Jenkins, the Packers have been doing some experimenting with their offensive line. Each practice has seen a new set up. While this may seem bad to some fans, I believe this is a great thing for the Packers long term. Bakhtiari and Jenkins will be back at some point. Lineman who are able to play multiple positions on the line are more valuable. Look at Jenkins. While his preferred position is guard, he can play (and has played) every position. If the Packers can cultivate more offensive lineman that can play multiple positions, this will make the unit very adaptable.
Overall, it was a great week at Packers training camp. Positives from the offense and defense had many people high on the Packers through the first week. A week of training camp means nothing in terms of wins and losses. However, it does build confidence in the team and players going into the season which could have an impact on success.
