We’ve got drama in Norman once again folks, and this time, it’s along the offensive line. It has been announced that Wanya Morris will be suspended for the start of the 2022 season. Insiders believe that he has been suspended because of academic issues. This may ring a bell, as RB Marcus Major was suspended last season for a similar reason. However, unlike Major, Morris should be back rather soon, as most reports say that it likely won’t be for more than two games. We should see him back in action against Nebraska in Lincoln. With his absence, we will see someone new on the starting five, but who will it be?
Who Will Take His Place?
Morris’s absence raises several questions on who will take over at the right tackle position while he is gone. The most likely answer is TCU transfer Tyler Guyton. Standing in at 6’7″, 325 pounds, the Redshirt Sophomore is a force to be reckoned with. He has received a ton of praise from head coach Brent Venables, and was a name to watch out for on our depth chart projections for 2023. With Morris out, I have no doubt that Guyton will step in and flourish at the right tackle spot. With an opportunity to showcase his skills, don’t be surprised if Guyton takes the spot outright and starts for the rest of the year. He is very mobile, and showcases great footwork. He’s got the size and length that an elite tackle should have, the only question is, how much has he developed technically over the offseason. Coming out of high school, Guyton was a “low floor, high ceiling” prospect according to 247’s Gabe Brooks. He struggled with pad level and hand placement, but overall had massive amounts of upside. After an entire summer with Bill Bedenbaugh, as well as two seasons with Chris Thomsen at TCU, expect Guyton to be an extremely reliable and consistent option at tackle, at least until Wanya Morris is back.
