The NFL coaching carousel came to an end last week and legendary coach Bill Belichick did not get one of the seven openings available. After 24 years with the New England Patriots, Belichick will not be coaching next season. His former player, and now Fox Sports Analyst, Rob Gronkowski has an interesting theory as to why Belichick did not end up with one of the coaching openings.
NFL Legend Rob Gronkowksi Shares His Theory
Rob has shared numerous interesting takes in classic ‘Gronk’ form in his short time as an analyst and now he has an interesting theory as to why Belichick will not be coaching in 2024. Rob was quoted saying:
“I feel like what happened is that I don’t think that the Atlanta Falcons organization wanted to give up that much power and give all the decisions to Coach Belichick,” Gronkowski told Fox News Digital. “Other than that, I think Coach Belichick would have been the perfect fit.”
Gronk is hinting at Belichick getting an offer but perhaps he declined it as the Falcons did not give Belichick the power that he wanted. He is the second analyst to be singing this tune as Boomer Esiason said the same thing about Belichick. Now that there are multiple reports, it is probable that the coach was offered the Falcons gig but without all the power and Belchick declined.
Rob Gronkowski Thinks A Year Off Will Be Great For Belichick
Rob thinks that this year off will do the older coach well as this is all he has known for many decades. He thinks Bill will be able to come back strong after a year away. Rob was quoted saying:
“I think Coach Belichick should take a year off from coaching,” Gronkowski told Fox News. “I mean, he’s put his time in. He’s been coaching for 50 years-plus straight, too, in the NFL. I mean, he can take a year off, reinvent himself, [go] find himself, go enjoy something other than just football.”
He continued this point by saying:
“I think it would be great for him and then have him come back next year, resurrected and ready to go and put a display on wherever he lands a head coaching job next year.”
It is highly possible Belichick was offered a job and declined, but either way he will be sitting out this year and we will see if that ends up being a good thing for arguable the best coach ever.
