The New England Patriots are going into next season with an entirely different look. The long time legendary coach Bill Belichick will not be in the building and the team is moving forward with Jerod Mayo. Top defensive player on the team Matthew Judon was on Good Morning Football on Wednesday and he did not hold back when revealing his thoughts on the team moving on from coach Belichick.
New England Patriots’ Matthew Judon Candid About Bill Belichick
Judon was candid about the teams decision to move on from the long time legend and he felt that it was time for a change. Judon loved playing playing for Bill and learnt so much from the defensive guru but he admitted that it was time to move on.
“It was amazing to learn from him. But I think just with him leaving, I think it’s just new energy and new life in the building. Sometimes it’s just time. And I think it was just kind of one of those times,” Judon said, via Dakota Randall of NESN.
Judon saw some of the best play of his career under Belichick and clearly reveres him as one of the best to ever do it. He admits however, that it was time for a new energy in the building and now they have a lot to look forward to with the changes that will keep coming.
Matthew Judon Is Excited About Jerod Mayo
While Judon thinks it was the right time to move on from Belichick, he is excited to work with Mayo who will have a similar system but with his own twist. Mayo is a Patriot and was one of the fundamental voices during their dynasty, so Judon is excited about the new energy that he will bring to the team.
“And I think with the hiring of Mayo, bringing in somebody that’s been actually there for those years — that understands player perspective and coaching and how Coach Belichick actually ran the system — I think bringing in somebody like that, instead of somebody that’s outside that didn’t know at all, kind of helped us,” Judon said. “It kind of helped us because I think Mayo seen it going one way, and he’s trying to get it to go a different way.”
This team has new life heading into the 2024 season according to Judon and with the number 3 overall pick and over $100 million in cap space, the team can continue to make monster moves during free agency and the draft.
“And so, right there, we got new life. We got new expectations,” he added. “I think when we start, we’re all gonna try and run through a wall for Mayo just because he always had our back throughout everything that we go through. We always would kind of go to talk to him, and he would understand. .. And he would come to us and just kind of talk to us.”
