Three weeks into the NFL season and we can start to see a few different players separating themselves from the pack. SInce 2007, the NFL MVP award has gone to a quarterback every year besides 2012 when Adrian Peterson dominated the NFL. So it is safe to assume that the quarterbacks will be in the front running again this season for the MVP. Here are the MVP front runners after week 3.
Tier One
There are two players that come to mind after week three who really have separated themselves more than anybody else. Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson have really shown, for different reasons, why they should be NFL MVP this season. Allen is the only quarterback to throw for over a thousand yards through three weeks. Jackson has thrown the most touchdowns this season, 10, and his 243 rushing yards are good for fifth in the NFL this season. The only real discrepancy between these two is passing yards per game. Allen is averaging about eighty more passing yards per game than Jackson.
Lamar Jackson is clearly a man on a mission this season. Looking to cash in on big pay day this upcoming off season, Jackson is the favorite in my opinion through three weeks. Even with Allen having better passing numbers so far this season, Jackson is by far the more impactful player for his team.
Tier Two
Patrick Mahomes has been consistently great throughout his career and this season is no exception. Mahomes, who dominated in week 1 with five touchdowns, has had average weeks by his standards the last two. Week two was a different story as he was able to help his team climb out of their ten point deficit to come back and defeat the Los Angeles Chargers. Even with last week’s down performance Mahomes has to be considered for the MVP award.
Jalen Hurts has to be considered for the MVP award with Philadelphia starting off 3-0. In a week one victory Hurts dominated on the ground rushing for 90 yards on 17 carries. The last two weeks have been more about throwing the football for Hurts as he’s thrown for 333 yard and 340 yards respectively. Hurts isn’t the only former Alabama quarterback performing well this year.
Tier Three
Tua Tagovailoa has dominated this year with Jalen Waddle in his second season as well as the addition of Tyreek Hill. The week two comeback victory in Baltimore showed how resilient Tua is. He currently is second in yards and third in touchdowns while he quietly leads the NFL in QBR. This past week was a scary one for him as he was hit by Buffalo’s Matt Milano and seemed to be dazed after. Even with Tua being disoriented in the second half and struggling the Dolphins still were able to remain 3-0.
