The Miami Dolphins are expressing interest in upgrading their running back room via trade. Raheem Mostert had a career-year last season, posting over 1,000 all-purpose yards, He had 891 rushing yards and 202 receiving yards with a combined five touchdowns.
While that was a fairly good year of production, the Dolphins apparently do not see Mostert as an ideal featured running back. According to Cameron Wolfe of the NFL Network, Miami has been exploring trades for bigger names among the league’s most disgruntled running backs.
The Miami Dolphins Are Exploring a Trade for Indianapolis Colts Running Back Jonathan Taylor (NFL)
According to Wolfe, the Dolphins previously contacted the Las Vegas Raiders in regards to a trade for the 2022 NFL rushing leader Josh Jacobs. Since those talks did not progress and Jacobs is expected to report to the Raiders, they are now kicking the tires to see what it would take to acquire Jonathan Taylor from the Colts:
Dolphins made an exploratory call on 2022 rushing champ Josh Jacobs but talks didn’t go far, per source. Raiders told teams they don’t plan to trade Jacobs.
Miami has some interest in elite RB trade market — Jonathan Taylor, Jacobs — but only up to a certain price, I’m told.

As Wolfe mentions, the Dolphins want to upgrade their running back position, but are not willing to pay what it may take to acquire Taylor. According to ESPN, Indianapolis is seeking a first round pick or a comparable package of picks for the 2021 NFL rushing leader.
This is where things may get tricky for the Dolphins. In 2024, they are already down a third round pick due to their punishment for tampering. They also did not get a first round pick in 2023 for the same reason, though they did acquire a 2023 first round pick from San Francisco in 2021, but traded that one to the Denver Broncos for Bradley Chubb.
In addition, the Chubb deal also cost the Dolphins their 2024 fourth round pick. In total, Miami has just five draft picks in 2024, and none in rounds three and four. It is not likely they want to go two consecutive years without a first round pick, and trading their second round pick would mean they would have no Day Two picks.
In other words, the high asking price in terms of draft capitol is not something Miami is willing to spend, and who can blame them? In addition to trading the picks, they would also need to spend a great amount of money to extend Taylor.
Chalk this report up to the Dolphins doing their due diligence, but do not expect a deal between the two clubs.
