The NFL has a new Goat according to many media personalities. Following The Kansas City Chiefs 17-10 victory over the Baltimore Ravens, Patrick Mahomes is now going back to his fourth Super Bowl to try and win his third. Mahomes has had the best starting 6 years to any career in the NFL, and after this specific victory many of the NFL personalities are now putting Mahomes as the greatest quarterback to ever play the game.
NFL Media Proclaims Patrick Mahomes As The Greatest
Patrick Mahomes has clearly had the best start to a career for quarterbacks and what he has already been able to accomplish has many media analysts calling him the greatest ever already. Stephan A Smith, Colin Cowherd, Nick Wright, Mike Greenberg, and many others all called Mahomes the greatest after his 7 point victory over the Ravens in the AFC Championship.
Not even one year since 7 time Super Bowl Champion Tom Brady has left the league, the media already wants to say there is new Goat in town. This is not only incredibly disrespectful to the greatest the NFL has ever seen, it is also not right to Patrick. Mahomes may very well put himself in that debate in a decade from now but to already think about having this debate is simply blasphemous.
There Is No Comparison To Be Made… Yet
Mahomes is not even half way to Tom Brady’s accomplishments and to be making the comparison right now is not even a conversation. Brady’s list of accolades is longer than the bible, as he has more Super Bowls than any franchise in the NFL, not any player, any FRANCHISE. There will still be many many years until a franchise ties just that Man in Super Bowls. Let alone the fact that Brady leads every stat category in both the post season and regular season.
Brady has 251 regular season wins and added 35 post season wins to bring his total to 286. Mahomes on the other hand, has 74 regular season wins and has 14 post season wins. Now, while many will argue that Mahomes does not need to eclipse those numbers to be compared to Brady, Mahomes is not even in the same stratosphere as those numbers, as he is almost half way there.
Beyond the fact that Brady is miles ahead in literally everything from winning, to Super Bowls, to every single stat category, Brady is 2-0 against Mahomes in the Playoffs with one of those games being a Super Bowl. This is not even prime Brady as Brady was in his 40s at the time and still beat him with the Patriots in the AFC Championship and then went on to win the Super Bowl that year. And then, with his first year with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at age 43 he beat Mahomes 31-9 in the Super Bowl.
Tom Brady’s Competition > Patrick Mahomes
When most of the media personalities showed their top ten quarterbacks of all time, putting Mahomes at the top, when you look at half of the top ten, that was Brady’s competition. Not to put any disrespect to any of the quarterbacks playing, but besides for Mahomes there is not a top ten all time quarterback in the NFL today. Josh Allen is great, and Lamar Jackson is awesome, but these guys are not going to go down as one of the ten best to ever do it.
Brady on the other hand dominated the league, even more than Mahomes has so far, against 6 of the top 15 quarterbacks who ever played including Mahomes. When you look at the top quarterbacks to ever play the game that list includes: Peyton Manning, Patrick Mahomes, Brett Favre, Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers, and Ben Roethlisberger. All of those guys besides Ben are thought of as top 10 of all time and Brady absolutely dominated a league that saw all of those guys.
While there are many amazing young quarterbacks today none of them, besides Mahomes can be said in the same breath as those guys. While Patrick can already be thought of as top 5 all time guy, to put him in the same conversation as Brady is not only premature, but incredibly disrespectful to what we have all witnessed for the past 20 plus years. While Mahomes may very well end up in that debate, it is about a decade premature to make that comparison.
We as fans want to feel like we are seeing the best thing ever every year, and that is simply not the case. It took Brady to make a 25 point comeback in the Super Bowl to win his fifth, to start a conversation between him and the great Joe Montana.
It took Lebron James over a decade and a half of playing and coming back down 3-1 in the finals against the Golden State Warriors to start the conversation between him and the great Michael Jordan. Brady demolished Mahomes in the biggest game, where Mahomes could not even put the ball in the end zone. While Patrick has the best shot of any player right now to be compared to the greatest ever, it would be proper to give him a little bit more time before comparing him to the greatest winner that any American team sport has ever seen.
