The Buffalo Bills emerged with former Florida State wide receiver Keon Coleman at the top of the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft, but might not be done bolstering quarterback Josh Allen‘s supporting cast.
After losing both Stefon Diggs, in a trade with the Houston Texans, and Gabriel Davis, the Bills’ receiving corps needs an overhaul.
It’s difficult to imagine general manager Brandon Beane and the Bills standing pat, and allowing Allen to begin the upcoming season with Khalil Shakir, Coleman, and Curtis Samuel as the top three wide receivers on the depth chart.
Armed with significant cap space over the next two offseasons, Buffalo could be a team to watch to pull off a blockbuster trade to acquire a veteran pass-catcher before the upcoming season gets underway.
Buffalo Bills-Denver Broncos Courtland Sutton Trade Proposal
Denver Broncos wide receiver Courtland Sutton has been the subject of nearly constant trade speculation over the past two seasons, and as the 28-year-old enters the fourth year of a five-year contract, there remains a possibility he is traded this spring.
Bleacher Report’s Zach Bachar put together a list of Sutton’s best fits, and the Bills made the cut.
“After the Bills lost Gabriel Davis in free agency,” Bacher writes for Bleacher Report. “They traded Stefon Diggs to the Houston Texans. Although Buffalo attempted to improve its wide receiver group by selecting Florida State’s Keon Coleman at the top of the second round, the team could still add another weapon for Josh Allen to throw to.
“After all, Coleman was the only receiver that Buffalo selected in the 2024 draft. The Bills also have $27.4 million in 2025 effective cap space, giving them just enough room to potentially give Sutton a contract extension following a potential trade.”
Can the Bills Afford Sutton?
If Buffalo is serious about prying away Sutton, Beane may need to pay a premium.
According to Mike Klis of News 9 in Denver, the Broncos have “no plans” to trade Sutton.
While that might be the case currently, Sutton is due $13 million in base salary in 2024 and $13.5 million in 2025.
If the Broncos are looking to move on from Sutton, and avoid potentially losing him as a free agent following the 2025 campaign, perhaps a first-round pick and a third-round selection in the 2025 draft could persuade Denver to strike a deal.
After all, Buffalo’s Super Bowl window is contingent on surrounding Allen with playmaking weapons, and Buffalo is slated to have $5.8 million in cap space in 2025, $85.3 million in 2026, and $240.6 in 2027, which would be plenty of spending flexibility to fit a new Sutton deal under the cap.
