As NFL free agency has been in full swing, there has been a huge story that has gone under the radar. While the Kansas City Chiefs are all in on going for a three peat, there have been reports that the front office and ownership that the team may leave Kansas City in the not too distant future.
Chiefs President Is Considering Making A Team Move From Kansas City
There are major moves going on for the Kansas City Chiefs as an organization. On April 2nd the city will make a vote on whether they want to keep the current sales tax bill or to replace it with a new one. This vote will have major implications for the future of the Chiefs and Royals specifically.
The Chiefs have already been reported that they want to make major renovations for Arrowhead Stadium. The projected cost would be north of $800 million. If the residents of Kansas City repeal the current tax bill then the team will most definitely remain in the city. However, if the current bill remains intact there have already been conversations about the incredible franchise leaving the city.
Clark Hunt the teams owner has yet to make a public comment on whether or not the team will stay in the city, but the president Mark Donovan has publicly said that there’s no guarantee the team will stay put. If the bill remains intact on April 2nd, then the talks of actually moving the team will pick up drastically.
Mark Donovan Says The Franchise Will Look At All Of Their Options
President Mark Donovan spoke to spoke to KSHB-TV about the future of the franchise, specifically in regards to the future in Kansas City. He admitted that they are open to options of leaving and only time will tell.
“I just know that for us, the Chiefs, we have to look at all of our options,” Donovan said.
Before the entire population of Kansas City loses their minds, Donovan made it crystal clear that the organization wants to always remain in Kansas City. There will have to be many dominos to fall for the team to actually make a move to another city.
“Our goal here is we want to stay here,” Donovan said. “And we’re willing to accept a deal, which is actually better for the country, to stay here.”
The fact that these are talks in the middle of dynasty is quite interesting to say the least. To move the team out of the city would be unfathomable especially in the middle of one of the greatest teams the NFL has ever seen. We will get a lot more insight into this story after April 2nd when the vote is made.
