The Kansas City Chiefs are making a costly decision on Patrick Mahomes’ contract in a bid to clear space for their shot at a third consecutive Super Bowl win. The Chiefs came into the offseason knowing they’d face difficulties with their cap situation.
The Kansas City Chiefs have been quiet this week
The Chiefs have been mostly quiet in bringing in outside talent in free agency this week. But they took care of a few key defenders. They made sure to get star defensive tackle Chris Jones paid. The Chiefs extended Drue Tranquill last week. They also applied the franchise tag to L’Jarius Sneed.
Per Over The Cap, the Chiefs are in the red by $6 million on Tuesday evening. The Chiefs had to do something to get underweight for the rest of the offseason.
The Chiefs restructured Patrick Mahomes’ contract
According to Adam Schefter with ESPN, the Chiefs are restructuring Mahomes‘ contract. The restructuring will save the Chiefs $21.6 million in the salary cap for the 2024 season.

The cost will come later for the Chiefs
The move will help the Chiefs this season but will come at a price in future seasons. The Chiefs will have more dead money hit their books in subsequent years in order to free up money this offseason.
It’ll be worth it if the Chiefs can score a threepeat. But the Chiefs could be heading for a dry spell in February in the next few seasons.
