Las Vegas Raiders running back Josh Jacobs can’t seem to get out of the crosshairs of the NFL and Roger Goodell. Per the NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the NFL smacked Jacobs with a $21,855 fine for unnecessary roughness against the New York Jets last week. Jacobs’ most recent fine marks his second in as many games.
The NFL fined #Raiders star RB Josh Jacobs again, docking him $21,855 for unnecessary roughness on this run last week vs. the #Jets.
It’s the same amount Jacobs was fined for a similar play last week. The league has made lowering the head an emphasis, and the fines keep coming. pic.twitter.com/3KjOb3q1jX

The NFL is docking the All-Pro a considerable amount of cash for lowering his head during a run midway through the second quarter during Sunday Night Football. Jacobs had to pay an identical $21,855 last week for leading with his helmet during a run in Week 9.
Las Vegas Raiders RB Josh Jacobs: Repeat Offender of Lowering Helmet Rule
This month, Josh Jacobs is nearing $50,000 worth of fines for unnecessary roughness. The NFL has made it a priority to crack down on runners leading with their helmets; the league made it a rule in 2013, revised it in 2018, and made even more revisions this past offseason.
The league rule states, “It is a foul if a player: (a) lowers his head and makes forcible contact with his helmet against an opponent; or (b) uses any part of his helmet or facemask to butt or make forcible contact to an opponent’sopponent’s head or neck area. These provisions do not prohibit incidental contact by the mask or the helmet in the course of a conventional tackle or block on an opponent.”
The league’s attempt to clarify the rule has still led to nearly all the discipline being handled through fines and suspension, not in-game penalties. Running backs are susceptible to getting fined for using their helmet on run plays and pass plays. The NFL fined Pittsburgh Steelers back Jaylen Warren $48,556 for using his helmet in pass protection earlier this year.
Josh Jacobs: Down Year After Career Year
It could become problematic for Josh Jacobs to move forward with his pocketbook taking a beating over the past few weeks. Jacobs has rushed for just 622 yards on 186 attempts this season after leading the league with 1,653 rushing yards last year. His frustration with the NFL took center stage last week, taking to social media to share his disbelief in being fined for a routine running play in Week 10. He tagged the NFL in a tweet saying, “Y’all gotta chill with the bs.”
